Dating Advice - July 2006

getting ready to go out

July 28th 2006 10:27
i know this is a dating advice column..i will do my best...

you know...if you have not been out with the particular person in question...how does one prepare for such an adventure into the unknown?

i think is starts with something about care
that is..care for yourself

settle back and wonder for a while...what makes you feel cared for?
how can you make this happen in your world before you venture into the unknown with your new date?

for some it is to buy a new outfit, a trip to the hairdresser etc...and we can all read heaps on what we can do to look good etc..but i want to write about a different sort of care. a care of the inner self

i wonder if it would be a good idea to spend some time on the early part of the day before you meet your new person, just wondering about how it is to feel cared for deep inside?

how can we care for ourselves on the inside?
maybe it is sitting quietly
maybe it is listening to favorite music
or playing the guitar
or taking a deep bath
or making something in the kitchen
or walking in the park

you can see i am refering to a deep inner care, a care of the soul!
...something we can do specifically for ourselves to reconnect with that part of ourselves that is deep and loving and completely unique.....we can care for ourselves in this way, we can do this ourselves...as a way of preparing to go out into the unknown, to meet a new person
perhaps if we care for ourselves in this little way as preparation before going out on our new date, we can be more settled, more connected, more present to who we are...and so more able to get to know the other

i wonder what would happen?

see you next time

being ourself continued....

I realise of course this dating site will not be the same as before, but I can only do what I can do...so I will write as I can on dating advice and welcome your comments!

last time I wrote about being yourself.....today I want to continue this theme...and we will see were we go.

It really could be seen to make a lot of sense to be yourself...cos the interrelational space that is created between the two of you will have a greater chance of being authentic.

Who we are what we know about ourselves and how we present ourselves to the world are three structures that interplay with the other (our date) to create an encounter.

If we want to know who the other is, and to understand how they operate and where they are at, and whether is it possible to be in a loving relationship at all....then I feel it is honourable to both yourself and the other to try and be as true to yourself as possible. This does not mean being selfish (unless being selfish is your thing), but to be mindful of being true to yourself, the best and closest rendition of yourself, like a sort of anchor point and foundation.

I will try and explain this a little more...if I like reading philosophy, but think my date is not into philosophy...and he asks me what I like to read, and by that time I know he is not into philosophy but I like him and want to get to know him more...what do I do? Common advice might be to deny my interest in philosophy and not mention it, in case it turns him off.
But wait, what have I done if I do this?

I have mislead him, denied myself and created an entanglement...a situation that will need explaining or undoing later on...all for the sake of trying to sustain an interest. This is not a good move, and I admit I have done this in the past.

Now I know not everyone will agree, so write in and tell me what you think!
